Oral Medications

Oral medications can be classified into several categories based on how they work to alleviate pain. Depending on your condition, your physician at Premier Pain Clinic may recommend one or more of the following types:

• Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Common NSAIDs such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) are effective at reducing inflammation and relieving pain. They are often used for conditions like arthritis, muscle injuries, and menstrual pain.

• Acetaminophen: Known commonly by its brand name Tylenol, acetaminophen is often used for mild to moderate pain and fever reduction. It’s a go-to option for headaches, muscle pain, and joint discomfort without the anti-inflammatory properties of NSAIDs.

• Opioids: These powerful medications are prescribed for severe pain, often after surgery or for chronic conditions like cancer pain. Opioids, including medications such as oxycodone or hydrocodone, work by blocking pain signals in the brain. Due to the risk of dependency, they are prescribed cautiously and typically only for short-term use.

• Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants, such as amitriptyline or duloxetine, are used for chronic pain conditions like neuropathic pain (nerve pain). These medications can help modulate pain by affecting the brain’s chemical neurotransmitters.

• Anticonvulsants: Medications like gabapentin or pregabalin, which are primarily used to treat seizures, can also be effective in managing nerve pain by stabilizing overactive nerve activity.

• Muscle Relaxants: These medications are prescribed to relieve muscle spasms and pain, commonly associated with conditions like lower back pain or injuries. Examples include cyclobenzaprine or baclofen.
