Low Dose Naltrexone:
Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is showing promise in managing chronic pain. Unfortunately, this is not yet covered by Ontario drug plans or private insurance and can cost approximately $250/per month
Anti-inflammatories:
Anti-inflammatories can be a powerful aid to pain reduction; however, they can also cause serious problems, including gastro-intestinal bleeding, high blood pressure and kidney issues. Please ask your healthcare provider if this medication is appropriate for you.
Acetaminophen Tylenol:
This is a weak pain-killer which is used for reducing fevers. It can damage the liver if taken at too high of a dose.
Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors duloxetine venlafaxine:
This is a family of medications which increase serotonin and norepinephrine levels. These chemicals are important in managing pain.
Anti-convulsants (pregablin (Lyrica) gabapentin (Neurontin)
Although used to stabilize nerves in seizures, it can also be helpful in stabilizing nerves in other parts of the body. Common medications include gabapentin (neurontin) and pregablin (Lyrica).
Tricyclic Anti-depressants (amitriptyline/nortriptyline)
Although used for depression, these medications also help manage pain by increasing serotonin and norepinephrine levels. Nortriptyline and amitriptyline are common medications in this category.
